If your brief mentions specific components — a 555, an op-amp, a particular logic family — build it discretely. You will be asked to derive time constants or explain the comparator threshold, and having a microcontroller in the middle makes that harder, not easier.
If the brief is about function rather than implementation, a microcontroller is usually the better engineering choice: fewer components, easier to modify, and a clearer path to adding a display or logging.
Projects are assembled on perfboard or a fabricated board rather than left on a breadboard, with components mounted flat and joints properly soldered. Test points are left accessible so you can put a multimeter probe on the important nodes during your viva.
Where a project has a calibration step — a threshold pot, a sensitivity trim — it is labelled, because an examiner asking you to change the trip point mid-demonstration is a common and entirely fair request.
The difference between an average electronics project and a good one is usually a table of readings. If your project detects something, record the actual threshold at which it triggers across a few conditions. It takes an hour and it changes the whole tone of the assessment.
