An ultrasonic sensor mounted on a servo sweeps across the robot's path. When an obstacle appears inside the stop distance, the robot halts, looks left and right, compares the two clearances and turns towards the larger one before continuing.
The scanning approach is what makes this project worth building rather than a fixed forward-facing sensor. It gives the robot a genuine decision to make, and it gives you something to talk about: why the robot reverses slightly before turning, and what it does when both directions are blocked.
The behaviour is deliberately conservative — it prefers stopping to guessing — which makes it reliable to demonstrate on an unfamiliar floor.
The ultrasonic sensor is reliable from roughly 3 cm to 2 m. The stop distance is normally set around 20–25 cm and is adjustable in the sketch.
Ultrasonic sensing struggles with angled glass and thin table legs because the echo scatters away. That limitation is worth stating in your report — examiners appreciate it being acknowledged.
