Three flame sensors mounted at different angles let the robot work out roughly where a flame is rather than only whether one exists. It turns to centre the strongest reading, approaches to a fixed standoff distance, then runs a small pump to direct water at the source.
The standoff matters. A robot that drives all the way into the flame is not demonstrating fire fighting, and it also tends to melt. The approach stops at a set distance measured by the ultrasonic sensor, which is an easy thing to point at during questioning.
For safety the project is demonstrated on a candle-scale flame in a controlled setup, and the robot returns to a standby state once the flame sensors stop reading. Never demonstrate it near curtains, paper or anything else that can catch.
It is designed for a small controlled flame such as a candle, on a clear surface, with nothing flammable nearby. Follow the demonstration guidance supplied with it and keep an adult or staff member present.
Detection of a candle-sized flame is reliable to roughly a metre indoors. Bright sunlight and halogen lamps interfere with IR flame sensors, which is worth noting in your report.
