Project overview
An ultrasonic sensor above the water surface measures the clearance to the top of the water, which converts to a level once the tank height is entered during setup. Nothing touches the water, so there is no probe corrosion and no contamination concern — the practical advantage over conductive probes.
The controller drives the pump automatically between the low and full set points and pushes level readings to a dashboard. Alerts fire on low level and on an abnormally long pump run, which is what a real overflow or dry-run event looks like.
Levels are logged so you can present daily consumption, and that log is what elevates it from a level indicator to a monitoring system — a distinction examiners specifically look for in a final-year submission.

How it works
- 1The sensor measures clearance from the tank top down to the water surface.
- 2Clearance is subtracted from the configured tank height to give the water level as a percentage.
- 3Readings are median-filtered so surface ripple does not produce false values.
- 4The pump relay closes at the low set point and opens at the full set point.

Questions about this project
Why ultrasonic instead of probes?
Nothing touches the water, so there is no corrosion and no contamination, and you get a continuous reading rather than four steps. The trade-off is that surface ripple needs filtering, which is handled in the firmware.
Does the pump control work without the network?
Yes. Pump control is entirely local — the network is only used for the dashboard and alerts.
