Cost depends on components, complexity and which deliverables you need, so we quote after understanding your requirement.
An MQ-series gas sensor monitors the air continuously. A first threshold raises a warning indication, and a second, higher threshold sounds the alarm and starts an exhaust fan. Two stages rather than one is what makes the project useful: a brief cooking spike should not trigger a full alarm.
Sensor warm-up is the detail students most often miss. MQ sensors need a preheat period before their readings mean anything, and a detector that alarms the moment it is switched on is reading its own warm-up, not gas. The build handles this with a startup delay and a status indication, which is a good thing to be able to explain.
A connected variant on ESP32 adds a push notification so the alert reaches a phone when nobody is in the room. Both versions keep the local buzzer and fan output, because an alert that depends on the network is not a safety device.
With a gas lighter held briefly near the sensor and released, in a ventilated space — never with an open cylinder valve. The safe test procedure is covered at handover.
It is an academic project, not a certified detector. It reliably demonstrates the principle and the threshold behaviour, and you should present it that way — examiners respect the distinction.
