An HC-05 module receives single-character commands from a standard Android controller app and the Arduino translates them into motor directions. Forward, reverse, left, right, stop and a set of speed levels cover everything a demonstration needs.
The feature worth building in is the failsafe. If no command arrives within a short timeout the robot stops by itself, so walking out of range leaves it stationary rather than driving into a wall. Examiners ask what happens when the link drops, and having a real answer is better than an apology.
A gesture-controlled variant replaces the phone with an accelerometer worn on the hand, sending the same command set over a wireless link — the robot itself is unchanged, which makes the two versions a nice comparison to discuss.
Any standard Bluetooth serial controller app for Android works, since the robot accepts plain characters. The command set is documented so you can use or build any app you prefer.
Around 10 metres indoors with clear line of sight, which is well beyond what a classroom demonstration needs. Beyond that the failsafe stops the robot.
